The case for poetry

There are very few occasions
when you need a sharpened sickle
but I always keep one with me,
just in case I’m in a pickle.

There are very few occasions
when you need a man-made dam
but I always keep one with me,
just in case I’m in a jam.

There are very few occasions
when you need to read a poem
but I always keep one with me,
just in case I’m all alone.
